A Statement of Support for Defund Charlottesville Police’s demands regarding the events of Nov. 15/16th:
“We, the UVA chapter of United Campus Workers of Virginia, affirm our support for Defund CPD and other groups working towards police abolition in the city of Charlottesville. We join in their call for the officers involved in the brutal assault on a Black Charlottesville resident on the evening of November 15th to be fired. We further reiterate our demand that the University of Virginia immediately take steps towards defunding the University Police Department, which serves as a tool of racist oppression in both the University and the city at large. The University speaks out of both sides of its mouth when it says it wants to address institutional racism while at the same time pouring resources into policing. It is shameful that this school cannot afford hazard pay for custodial and dining workers, but can afford to keep armed guards who attack Black and Brown people on its payroll.”
